The "the horseman" etude gets its name from the fact that is sounds like a horse galloping, with the audible 3 beats in a 3/4 time signature with quadruplets. The piece is also given the names "horseman and "the knight", but Chopin thought the idea of naming pieces was wrong, so he didn't approve. The piece consists of playing medium intervals on the 1st quadruplet with fingers 1-3 or 1-4, a note inside the interval using the fingers 2-3 on the 2nd quadruplet beat, and finally a note above the chord on the 3rd quadruplet the 4th quadruplet is left clear which makes the piece sound like it is galloping. "The horseman" later has a reprise of the first theme with difficult trills, an easier left hand in B major, and forte. The ending of the piece uses difficult trills with octaves playing every beat, and finally ends on an unusual scale very similar to the coda of Op. 10 No. 8, in fact it uses the exact same notes, in the exact same key. It is one of the more difficult etudes of both Op. 25 and Op. 10.
